ABOUT: Cantina Tollo is one of Italy's biggest wine-makers. A farming cooperative founded in 1960, that today directly controls approximately 3000 hectares of vineyards in the region of Abruzzo. Today Cantina Tollo is one of Italy's most important producers of organic wines. The winery has implemented a policy of conversion to organic production since the early ’90s, when the European Union issued the first regulations governing this area (Regulation 2078). The process of conversion to organic cultivation methods has continued since then, and 237 hectares have been converted so far, with a potential of about 4.500 tons of grapes. The cooperative has converted 123 hectares of Montepulciano, 99 of Trebbiano, 6 of Merlot, 4 of Sangiovese and the remainder is Cabernet. Cantina Tollo has taken action to reduce environmental impact in 3 areas: 1) reducing noise 2) reducing emissions 3) treating water. It now falls well below the minimum requirements of the law in all three areas. In the area of water treatment, considerable investment now permits re-use of treated water for irrigation.
